CHROMATICS: THE GRASS _IS_ GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE- PASTOR GREG ELKAN.
“Jade”, “aquamarine”, “emerald” … I used to think I knew the different types of the colour green, turns out I was wrong by a margin – a very wide margin.
When we talk of colours, we generally imagine the 7 colours of the rainbow; but to scientists and other professionals who work with colours, each specific colour is thought of in terms of its “hues”, its _“chroma”_ (saturation or intensity), lightness, tints, shades, etc.
In fact, there’s actually a scientific discipline solely concerned with the study of colour; it’s called *“Chromatics”.* And when it comes to green alone, chromatics has identified an incredible 295 types of green in existence! From the banal “apple” and “bottle” green; to the exotic-sounding “Harlequin”, “Erin”, “Hooker”, and “Malachite”.
It’s commonly said that _“The grass is always greener on the other side;”_ well, with this number of greens in existence, how can that not be the case? Granted, the “grass” being referred to in that statement is not literal, but I believe that the number of hues of green that real grasses come in is a fitting metaphor of the variety of options that exist in life in general.
There will _always_ be someone smarter than you, someone stronger than you, someone more beautiful than you, more talented, more gifted, more endowed, etc. The day you let that truth sink into your mind is the day your deliverance from anxious discontentment begins.
Discontentment is not a function of your resources, but a state of your mind. You can have everything in the world and still be discontent; if the Serpent could convince Eve – living in a literally perfect world – that she needed something more, how much easier do you think it would be for him today?
The question is not whether the grass is greener on the other side, (it probably is); the issue is, _“What are you going to do about it?”_ Don’t let the scourge of this age consume you; again as Paul enjoins, _“godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing let us be with these things content.”_ (1Ti 6:6-8).
AMEN...
