DIDACTIC: "THE DAM BETWEEN THE TWO WORLDS" BY SOMDATTA MITRA
At the confluence of humanity and nature wisdom must prevail,
Enlightening the sensitivity of embracing each other and understanding perspectives.
Realising the intransigence of our rights and security,
Hegemony cannot dictate the heartbeat of a river.
We need a stewardship ,
to protect our territories that are afflicted by fierce invasion.
Let ambition never become the architect of ecocide,
And wars never divide the land where humanity and nature reside.
Let the river live it's thousand dreams untold,
Unchained by greed in nature 's harmony.
The Dam between two worlds, must not become a monument to human pride.
Where the conscience of civilisation,
and nature 's voice are cast aside.
A heritage written in silt and stone,
Measured not in rivalry or wars but in heartbeats.
Maps drawn to justify territories, Choke the throat of ancient valleys .
Common man's displacement receives hell's silence,
While boardrooms weigh his river in megawatts.

“The Dam Between the Two Worlds” by Somdatta Mitra is an environmental protest poem that explores the conflict between human ambition, political dominance, and the preservation of nature. The poet condemns ecological destruction, territorial rivalry, and the exploitation of natural resources for economic and political gains. Through the imagery of rivers, dams, ancient valleys, and displaced communities, the poem highlights the suffering of ordinary people whose livelihoods are sacrificed for large-scale development projects. It advocates environmental stewardship, peaceful coexistence, and respect for the rights of both nature and humanity. Ultimately, the poem emphasises that genuine progress should be measured not by economic power or territorial control, but by compassion, ecological balance, and the protection of human dignity.
