The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) is set to commence the second phase of its nationwide Capacity Building Workshop on Copyright, Reproduction Rights and Royalty Management in Abuja, barely one week after the successful Southwest edition held in Ibadan on June 18 and 19, 2026.

The workshop forms part of ANA's commitment to empowering Nigerian writers with practical knowledge and skills required to protect their intellectual property and maximize the benefits accruing from their creative works.

The two-day workshop, scheduled for June 26 and 27, 2026, will take place at the Mamman Vatsa Writers' Village, Mpape, Abuja, beginning at 9:30 a.m. daily. The programme is being organized by the Association of Nigerian Authors in collaboration with the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and the Reproduction Rights Society of Nigeria (REPRONIG) under the theme, "Literary Development in Relation to Rights, Royalties and Privileges."

According to ANA, the workshop is designed to deepen authors' understanding of copyright protection, reproduction rights, royalty management, and the various legal and institutional mechanisms available for safeguarding literary works in Nigeria. The initiative reflects the association's determination to ensure that writers are adequately informed about their rights and equipped to benefit from the economic value of their creative output.

The President of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, will serve as the Chief Host of the workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from an impressive lineup of resource persons, including Mallam Denja Abdullahi, former President of ANA; Dr. Keyna Eshika, National Financial Secretary of ANA; Dr. Aisha Zakari, a legal practitioner with expertise in intellectual property law; and Maik Ortserga, former National General Secretary of ANA.

The workshop will cover a wide range of topics, including understanding copyright law in Nigeria, authors' rights under Nigerian copyright legislation, the role of the Nigerian Copyright Commission in protecting creative works, and the functions of Collective Management Organizations (CMOs). Discussions will also focus on reproduction rights, secondary rights, licensing procedures, and the mechanisms for royalty collection and distribution.

In addition, participants will be exposed to practical strategies for safeguarding intellectual property, identifying available revenue streams from literary works, and understanding the privileges attached to copyright ownership. The programme will also feature hands-on advisory sessions and guidance on the registration of literary works with the Nigerian Copyright Commission, providing participants with direct access to expert support and professional advice.

ANA noted that the Abuja workshop is expected to attract authors, publishers, literary practitioners, and stakeholders from across the North Central zone and beyond. The association reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the capacity of Nigerian writers, promoting respect for intellectual property rights, and fostering a sustainable literary ecosystem where authors can thrive creatively and economically.
