LAMENT: "THE THOUGHTS OF HOME" BY RICHARD OYIBO
I am heartbroken,
As I watch hopelessly from shores of a foreign land.
My tears are flowing more than the waves before me,
Rivers I must cross before my feet will touch home.
The wind tells me stories of the place I once knew,
Treasured memories are now distant and faint.
With each year passing, the miles increase between us,
Leaving my soul longing for a familiar embrace.
But why does my land struggle? Unable to breathe
Why is hope heavy, held down by weights of hardship?
Broken systems, insecurity, all are unwanted battles,
Many have risen each day to be lost to a failing night.
Trust is fragile, it is burnt beneath the heat of the sun,
Lost in footprints, washed away by storms of the land.
Every promise made is like the dust in the harmattan air,
The ashes are the only reminder that strength remains.
But in this tragic story there is still a light shining through,
A flame refusing to die, steady and true, like a phoenix.
Healing will only comes when the country is finally divided,
This is a shared longing, and a call where unity will stand.
