ODE: "A VACCUM FILLED WITH YOU" BY SOMDATTA MITRA
In celebrations I remember you for a hug ,
Like the homecoming lamp that waits through every storm.
In everyday life , you are a light,
that always embraces me with a whisper ,
Quiet as moonlight finding its way through closed curtains.
My veins recognize your presence in every breath ,
As if my soul keeps an altar where your name is the flame.
In certain isolation , I feel low , in despair ,
I ask God for the irreparable loss in my life.
Everyone has their mother,
I see in their smiles and laughter.
Yet you left me for the heavenly abode ,
Like a garden left without its sun, shattering my world.
Your comfort has been my anchor , a precious asset ,
I have lived through.
The cocoon where I grew ,
learning to fly on wings you have wove.
Today I wrap my son in the same thread,
Yet I long for your touch .
Every moment when I battle alone , I seek your divine blink ,
That comfort which consoled me into confidence.
That hand that blessed me for a shield ---
The quiet armor I still feel around me.
A firefly usually brightens the night with its illumination ,
A lamp in a window doesn't chase the dark ....
It just waits until you find way home.
In every step, my life is a vaccum in your absence ,
An emptiness like a room where the echo of your name won't fade.
Where every word would spell beauty and comfort ,
Where silence spells like a lullaby you are still singing.
Through my son's eyes , I see you smile back at me ,
Quiet proof that love doesn't end , it just changes hands.

The poem " A vacuum filled with you" by Somdatta Mitra, expresses the deep grief of a daughter mourning the loss of her mother, whose love and comfort once gave her strength and security. Even in her absence, the mother’s presence continues to live in the speaker’s memories, emotions, and in the love she now gives to her own son. The poem ends with hope and tenderness, showing that true love never truly disappears but continues through generations.
