‎Experts at the Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling Psychology, Faculty of Education, Lagos State University, through the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Unit, on Tuesday, 26th May 2026, strongly advocated for effective stress management at the annual School and Community Health Programme of the department, focusing on promoting emotional well-being and healthy living among students.
‎The programme with the theme “Stress Management Among Students in Higher Institutions,” held at the Conference Hall, 3-in-1 Complex, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos, brought together experts from the medical field, psychologists, students, academics, and stakeholders to discuss effective stress management strategies within tertiary institutions.
‎The Dean, Faculty of Education, Professor Gabriel AKINDOJU, in his opening remarks, commended the Head, Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling Psychology, members of staff in the department, and students for organising such a timely needed health seminar.
‎Professor Akindoju, further encouraged students to seek help when needs arise, uphold discipline, responsibility, and mutual respect, describing these qualities as essential foundations for future success and leadership. He warned against the dangers of peer pressure, unhealthy social influences, and the desire for quick financial gains, stressing that students must prioritise their education, career development, and moral values.
‎In his welcome address, Head, Early Childhood Education Unit, Professor Babajide ABIDOGUN, urged students to be disciplined, focused, and intentional in their academic and personal pursuits, stressing that decisions made during university years have lasting implications.
‎The programme featured a drama presentation on student life challenges, followed by a keynote lecture delivered by guest speaker, Dr Akintunde AKIODE, a Senior Medical Officer, Lagos State University, Health Centre, Ojo, Lagos, who described stress as a psychological and physical response to life pressures when coping resources become insufficient.
Dr Akiode, identified common stressors among students to include academic demands, financial challenges, peer pressure, transportation difficulties, family responsibilities, and relationship issues. He further encouraged students to build emotional resilience, adopt healthy coping mechanisms, and maintain positive support systems for overall well-being.
‎Speaking at the programme, Head of Department, Professor Ife ABODUNRIN, described the initiative as an annual intervention aimed at addressing rising stress-related challenges among students and the wider society, while providing expert guidance on effective stress management amid increasing academic and social pressures.
‎The event featured active student participation and practical discussions on managing stress effectively within, and beyond the academic environment. It also featured a thought-provoking drama presentation which formed part of the programme, vividly portraying the emotional realities and pressures associated with student life while reinforcing the event’s central message on stress management and healthy living.
