FREE VERSE: "EID MUBARAK; ALHAMDULILLAH" BY SULAIMON KHALID
The first moon says, start;
and then we obey;
we begin to count our days;
one, two, three… to thirty.
We lived our nights in prayer;
and folded them like garments;
we lived our dawns in fear;
not the fear of sin;
but the fear of falling into it.
We spent our noons
with empty stomachs;
not because we could not eat;
not because we could not drink;
but because worship must first.
The second moon appears softly;
and whispers, a new month begins;
and we obey;
waving a joyous goodbye
to the holy month; Ramadan.
And when this month comes again
in another year;
may it not meet us here again;
but somewhere better;
somewhere higher;
a place we spent our nights seeking.
And may what has drawn us
closer to faith;
closer to Allah;
draw us even nearer;
to unshaken iman;
and to Jannah.

The poem reflects on the spiritual discipline of Ramadan, where believers prioritize worship and restraint to guard themselves against sin. It captures the joyful transition signaled by the second moon, bidding a grateful farewell to the holy month while embracing the celebration of Eid. Ultimately, it offers a soulful prayer for continuous growth, hoping that each year brings the believer closer to Allah and a higher station in Jannah
