ANA CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, HAILS CONTRIBUTIONS OF NIGERIAN WOMEN WRITERS_ BY ANA MEDIA TEAM
The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has joined the global community in commemorating this year’s International Women’s Day, a day set aside to recognize the invaluable contributions of women to society and to advocate for the protection and advancement of their rights.
On this significant occasion, ANA celebrates Nigerian women whose voices, creativity, and resilience continue to enrich literature, culture, and national development.
This was contained in a press statement jointly issued by the President of ANA, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, and the General Secretary, Dame Joan Oji, PhD.
According to the statement, Nigeria has been blessed with a rich tradition of remarkable women writers whose works have shaped the nation’s literary landscape and amplified the voices of women across the world. Distinguished authors such as Flora Nwapa, Buchi Emecheta, Zaynab Alkali, Professor Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, Professor Razinat Mohammed, Mabel Segun, Professor Ajima, Hafsat Abdulwaheed, Prof. Lola Akande, Lola Soneyin, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Sefi Atta, among others, have not only elevated Nigerian literature globally but have also courageously explored themes of identity, gender justice, cultural transformation, and the lived experiences of women. Their enduring legacies continue to inspire generations of writers and readers.
The statement further noted that these literary icons, alongside many contemporary women writers, have used the power of storytelling to challenge injustice, dismantle stereotypes, and advocate for social change. Through novels, poetry, essays, and scholarly works, they have illuminated the realities of women’s lives while promoting equality, dignity, and opportunity for all. Their contributions reaffirm literature as a powerful tool for social transformation.
ANA also acknowledged the growing number of emerging female voices in Nigerian literature who are pushing creative boundaries and redefining narratives about womanhood, leadership, and empowerment. The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and nurturing women writers through mentorship, literary programmes, and inclusive platforms that amplify their voices.
While celebrating the remarkable achievements of women, the association expressed concern over the persistent challenges faced by women and girls in Nigeria. According to ANA, issues such as gender-based violence, limited access to quality education, economic inequality, underrepresentation in leadership, and harmful cultural practices continue to hinder the full participation of women in national development.
ANA therefore called on the Federal Government of Nigeria, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen policies and programmes that protect the rights of women and promote gender equality. The association urged the government to intensify efforts to address gender-based violence, expand educational opportunities for girls, support women in the creative and cultural industries, and ensure greater representation of women in governance and decision-making processes.
As the world reflects on the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, the Association of Nigerian Authors reaffirmed its solidarity with women everywhere and its commitment to building a society where women’s voices are heard, respected, and celebrated. ANA encouraged all Nigerians to support initiatives that empower women, promote justice, and create an environment where every woman and girl can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress.
