ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE 2026 WORKSHOP ON LEADERSHIP SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND EFFECTIVE STUDENT UNION GOVERNANCE
1.0 PREAMBLE
Lagos State University (LASU), in conjunction with LASU Consult Limited and the Michael Imoudu Institute of Nigerian Labour Studies (MIINLS), Ilorin, hereby invites all Student Union Government (SUG) Executives in Nigerian Universities to participate in the *2026 Workshop on Leadership Skills Development and Effective Student Union Governance.
As provided in the Law establishing the University, the mission of Lagos State University is to provide qualitative education to the populace of Lagos State by preparing them for the challenges of managing both the private and public sectors through bringing education closer to those desirous of acquiring knowledge.
2.0 OBJECTIVES
At the end of the programme, participants shall be able to:
i. Appreciate the roles, responsibilities and mandates of Student Union Governments in achieving the vision and mission of their respective universities;
ii. Understand the meaning, essence, scope and roles of leadership in actualising the purpose of Student Union Governments;
iii. Delineate functions among organs, offices and positions within SUGs for effective coordination and efficient utilisation of resources; and
iv. Apply leadership and administrative skills towards achieving excellence in SUG operations.
2.1 THEME AND SUB-THEMES
Theme:
Leadership Skills Development and Effective Student Union Governance for SUGs in Nigerian Universities
Sub-Themes:
i. History and evolution of student and youth movements in Nigeria;
ii. SUGs and the vision and mission of Nigerian universities;
iii. Leaders and leadership: meaning and approaches;
iv. Moral and ethical issues in leadership: challenges for SUGs;
v. Visioning and motivation strategies for leadership performance;
vi. Strategic orientation and purposeful leadership;
vii. Change management processes and outcomes;
viii. Effective communication and interpersonal relations;
ix. Team-building and organisational development; and
x. Conflict management and resolution techniques.
3.0 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The workshop is designed for the following categories:
i. SUG Executive Council Members;
ii. SUG Legislative Arm (Parliament Members);
iii. SUG Judicial Council Members;
iv. Faculty and Departmental Association Leaders;
v. SUG Appointees and Special Aides;
vi. Union Secretariat and Support Staff; and
vii. Special Invitees and Emerging Leaders.
4.0 METHODOLOGY
Resource persons from the Michael Imoudu Institute of Nigerian Labour Studies (MIINLS), Ilorin, will adopt participatory facilitation techniques aimed at encouraging knowledge sharing and interactive engagement, recognising the prior experience of participants.
5.0 DATE, DURATION AND VENUE
Arrival: Sunday, 26th April 2026
Workshop: Monday, 27th – Tuesday, 28th April 2026
Departure: Wednesday, 29th April 2026
Venue: Dining Hall, near Council Chamber, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. daily
6.0 COST OF REGISTRATION
The cost of registration for the Workshop is fifty thousand naira (₦50,000.00) only per participant.
7.0 METHOD OF APPLICATION
i. Interested participants are to apply online and make payment via: www.lasu.edu.ng/lasuconsult;
ii. Completed application forms should be printed and presented for access to the Workshop;
iii. All participants must present a letter of nomination/endorsement from the Dean of Students’ Affairs or SUG President, as applicable;
iv. Participants are required to come along with two (2) recent passport photographs (white background) and other relevant documents.
8.0 APPLICATION DEADLINE
All applications must be submitted on or before Sunday, 26th April 2026. Late applications will not be accepted.
Only duly completed and endorsed applications will be considered. Successful applicants will be notified via email or SMS. Certificates of Participation will be issued to participants who complete the Workshop.
