ODE: "MAY 21ST, THE DAY I WAS BORN" BY SULAIMON KHALID

On May 21st, that year
My mom was brought to bed
As my arrival drew near
Nurses' urgent voices urged her to scream.

In the silence that followed
Her labor pains peaked
And I announced my arrival with a cry.

Ears heard my voice
Lips shared the news
Legs joined with voices; and welcomed me.

My cry, a declaration of being
A claim to have arrived
To live, dream, succeed.

On May 21st, my journey began
The ink of life started writing my tale
As I moved from her chest
To a new sphere.

May 21st, a day
To always give its call
A birthday to cherish
Till last breath
A day to treasure
To celebrate, to appreciate.
