JEREMIAD: "I DON'T LIKE BEING HUMAN" BY HAREEM FATIMA

I don't like being human
I don't like the word 'humane'
Because humans aren't generous
In fact...they are insane

They trade their souls to the devil
In exchange for materialistic gains
What is left behind isn't a human
Only a vulturous creature full of disdain..

I see people..
Claiming to be madly in love
But soon conditions come in
Instead of accepting blessings from above

And in the household
One can hear..

"Give me good grades, and you will be loved"
The Father says to the son.
"Buy me a car if I do so"
Says the seemingly obedient son

And in the alley
One can hear...

"If you have money, I will no longer act coy"
The voluptuous damsel says
"I will give you money if you let me savour your beauty"
The Princely demon says..

And in a nearby office
One can hear...

"I will work diligently..if you give a raise"
"I will give you a raise in exchange for 10 of your nights and days"
Witnesses turn a blind eye
Spirits frozen in fear...

And this is how it is with everyone
Poets too are going insane
We write to spread ideas, love and light
When only a handful of readers..
let alone humans..remain....

The poet persona does not like the state of being a human being because of the evils that the latter lives by. The voice of this piece gives:duress sex, deliberate carelessness of the society, lust instead of love and others as negativities of being in the world. The speaker concludes that poets continue to write but only few people read books.
