FAITH VS. _“BLAB IT AND GRAB IT”_ BY PASTOR GREG ELKAN.
_Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season …._ – Heb 11:23
One of the aspersions that were cast on the “Word of Faith Movement” when it hit the Church decades ago was its purported “Blab It, Grab It” message. Its detractors pointed out the shallowness of a doctrine that seems to revolve around the self instead of around Christ: a kind of _“My name is Jimmy and I want ya ta gimme”_ mindset.
While this is an unkind characterisation of the Word of Faith message, we cannot deny that many Christians actually see faith as a path to self-gratification. True, biblical faith, however, is simply a belief in what God has said in His Word. While admittedly, the Word does contain _“exceedingly great and precious promises”_ (2Pt 1:4), your gratification shouldn’t be the focus.
“God’s will” must be at the centre of your faith, not your pleasure. Many Christians (particularly in Pentecostal circles) see faith as a mechanism to get stuff; as a means to buy a _Bugatti La Voiture Noir_ or sport a _Paul Newman Rolex Daytona;_ (that’s a combined price tag of $36.3 million 🤑).
But Moses’ faith didn’t add stuff to him, his faith actually made him to _give up_ stuff!
For a season…
_“…choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;”_ – Heb 11: 25
Faith, true faith, is always long-term. True faith would never sacrifice – or lead you to sacrifice – eternal rewards for transient pleasures. In other words, if there are several possible positive outcomes in a given situation, faith will chose the best of the choices.
Everything from God is good but not everything good is from God; and because true faith is intrinsically tied to God, it can only produce the things God has for you – and nothing else.
The most productive and fulfilled Believer is one who draws out their faith from God’s word and the Spirit's leading, and not from self-centred motives. This is Moses’ faith lesson for today.
