CHRIST OVER CLERGY-(SOLO CHRISTO) BY PASTOR GREG ELKAN.

_For there is one God, andbetween God and men…_ – 1Ti 2:5

_Solo Christo,_ is the term given by historians to one of the five assertions (called “solas”) that Church historians observe the Reformers had in common. By crying _“Solo Christo”,_ (Latin for “by Christ alone”), the Reformers were protesting against the doctrine that made human priests (and also departed saints) as _mediators_ between God and the Believer.

This was particularly true when it came to confession of sins. The Reformers had issues with the fact that people had to confess their sins to church-ordained priests first before their sins were absolved or forgiven. This church tradition was clearly contrary to written scriptures which cite _“the man Jesus”_ as the _“sole Mediator between God and man”_ (1Tim 2:5).

The Bible also declares Christ as our sole High Priest (Heb 4:14), our sole Redeemer (Gal 3:13), and our sole intercessor before God (Rom 8:26,27,34).

No human being is worthy enough to stand between us and God; that’s the whole point of redemption in the first place. Jesus came to die for us to redeem us and bring us back to God (Jn 1:12).

Even in the Old covenant, a priesthood of a few over the rest was never God’s ideal (Ex 19:6; Is 61:6). From the beginning, God had always wanted close, _direct_ relationship with His children. It was sin that separated us from Him, and it is sin that Jesus came to die for. Creating an arbitrary class of middlemen _after_ salvation goes against both the spirit and the letter of the gospel message.

Even today, the cry of _“Solo Christo”_ is still relevant to Christians that believe they can only hear and receive from God through their pastor; and to pastors who tacitly and sometimes overtly act as though they play a special _mediatory_ role between God and His own people that He purchased with His own blood.
