EBIKA ANTHONY CONVENED A LANDMARK CONFERENCE IN IBADAN

Nigeria’s first poetry conference, convened by Ebika Anthony, was well attended on Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th of August 2026.

The two-day event was graced by erudite scholars and several eminent personalities. Professor Rasheed Olabiyi, Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan was the Chairman of the occasion, delivered a brilliant and precise speech that was both coherent and inspiring. 

Dr. Akin Tella delivered the maiden keynote address of the conference.

As is customary with him, the Patron of literary and artistic bodies — a medical doctor, gynaecologist, poet, writer, and columnist — was the first to arrive and stayed till the end of the richly loaded and educative programme.

Also in attendance was Dr. Bayo Adebowale, founder of the first and largest rural library and research center in Africa. He was accompanied by Yeye Akilimala, the Chief Librarian of the center.

Dr. Matthew Umukoro was also in attendance and thrilled the audience with a moving love poem. Associate Professor Osarobu Ugbodia 

The Chief Host was Dr. David Adewole, founder of The Elders’ Place, which served as the venue. Dr. Usman Akanbi, President of ANA, was ably represented by Mr. Funsho Omotoso. Dr. Rufus, Chairman of ANA Oyo State, was also among the participants who graced the occasion.Godson Osarenren founder of Poetry Naija was around for the programme.

It was, without gainsaying, a resounding success. Poets performed in thrilling ways to the delight of the audience. 

Rasidat Ajakaye a brilliant English/ literature lecturer in LASU who is also a radio presenter was the M.C. of the day.

Mention must be made of mrs oke of NCC who represented their D.G. Dr. Paul Asein.
