ELEGIAC: "I WISH YOU THE BEST" BY ALAYE ROMZIAT
What do you think these thoughts are?
Your opinions?
Your perspective?
No.
They are only the echoes of conversations I've had with your own silence, a quiet mechanism to hear your own voice when no one else would.
" Did you hear me?"
Yes.
They heard your voice.
But hearing is not the same as understanding.
Maybe this is how it was always meant to be.
Me, standing by the riverbank,
watching you sail toward the places your heart has always longed for,
while Heaven alone bears witness to the truth inside mine.
that I have never wished you anything but the best.
I want you to be happy.
Even if that happiness never finds its way back to me.
Perhaps that is the purest form of love,
the kind that loosens its grip,
opens its hands,
and smiles
while quietly bleeding.
The rest I leave to silence.
The language without words.
The tears that never become rain.
The language I understand the most.
The ache that never learns how to leave.
There are things I still wish to tell you.
I wish you never left.
But...
I understand.
I think I should tell you
I'm sorry.
Maybe I was never your peace.
Maybe I was only another storm passing through your sky.
Maybe my love would have only weighed your wings down.
So go.
Go where your soul feels lighter.
Go where your laughter doesn't have to fight to be heard.
Go where love finds you gently.
And as for me,
I will remain
with these unspoken words,
this quiet longing,
this heart
that chose to love you
without asking you to stay.
Because sometimes,
the deepest expression of love
is not
" Don't leave ."
It is,
"I wish you the best."

The poem "I Wish You the Best" is a heartfelt reflection on love, loss, and the painful beauty of letting go. The speaker acknowledges that although their love was genuine, it was not enough to make the relationship last. Rather than holding on with resentment, they choose to release the person they love, sincerely wishing them happiness even if that happiness no longer includes them. Through themes of silence, regret, acceptance, and selfless affection, the poem portrays the highest form of love as one that seeks the beloved's well-being without demanding their presence. Ultimately, it celebrates emotional maturity, sacrifice, and the quiet strength required to say, "I wish you the best."
