DEMOCRACY DAY 2026: ANA CALLS FOR URGENT NATIONAL RENEWAL, RESPONSIVE GOVERNANCE_ BY ANA MEDIA TEAM.
As Nigeria marks Democracy Day 2026, the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) joins millions of citizens in reflecting on the nation's democratic journey, its achievements, and the daunting challenges that continue to confront our people.
Democracy remains a noble ideal founded on justice, freedom, accountability, inclusion, and respect for human dignity.
However, these ideals can only be meaningful when they translate into improved living conditions and renewed hope for ordinary Nigerians.
ANA is deeply concerned about the worsening economic hardship across the country. Rising inflation, escalating food prices, unemployment, and the declining purchasing power of citizens have subjected millions of families to untold suffering. The increasing cost of living has pushed many Nigerians below the poverty line, while small businesses struggle to survive. We urge the Federal Government to implement practical economic policies that prioritize job creation, food security, industrial growth, and sustainable social welfare programs.
The Association is equally disturbed by the persistent insecurity threatening lives and livelihoods across various regions of the country. Kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, communal conflicts, violent crimes, and attacks on schools and rural communities continue to undermine public confidence and national stability. The protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government. We therefore call on all security agencies to intensify efforts toward intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and the swift prosecution of criminal elements.
ANA further draws attention to the state of education in Nigeria. A nation that neglects education compromises its future. The recurring challenges of inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, brain drain, industrial disputes, and limited access to quality education continue to weaken the sector. Government at all levels must invest significantly in education, strengthen public institutions, promote literacy, encourage research, and create an environment where learning and creativity can flourish.
As a body committed to literature, culture, and intellectual development, ANA is concerned about the declining support for the creative and cultural industries. Writers, publishers, artists, and other creative professionals continue to face numerous challenges, including piracy, limited access to funding, and inadequate institutional support. We call on the Federal Government to recognize the creative sector as a strategic contributor to national development and economic diversification by providing policies that encourage creativity, innovation, and cultural preservation.
The Association also urges government to address growing concerns regarding corruption, governance deficits, infrastructural decay, and the widening gap between public institutions and citizens. Democracy thrives when leaders remain accountable, transparent, and responsive to the needs of the people. We encourage public office holders at all levels to embrace integrity, strengthen democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that public resources are utilized for the common good.
On this Democracy Day, ANA calls upon all Nigerians to remain committed to the ideals of peaceful coexistence, national unity, civic responsibility, and constructive engagement. While challenges persist, the future of Nigeria can still be secured through visionary leadership, responsible citizenship, and collective determination.
We urge the Federal Government to listen attentively to the voices of the people and take decisive actions that will restore confidence, strengthen democratic governance, and build a more prosperous, secure, and equitable nation for present and future generations.
