SNIPPETS (51)- BY SUMAILA UMAISHA
_From my chats with writers_
For me, art is activism. Whether I am writing or directing. Whether I am producing someone’s play or mine. I prioritize honesty, emotional truth, and relevance. I want audiences to leave with questions, and sometimes, with answers. I want audiences to see themselves in our works. Balancing artistic expression with social commentary involves a delicate fusion of creativity and conscience. As an artist, I see my work not just as a platform for beauty or entertainment, but as a mirror to society and a tool for reflection, education, and sometimes even provocation.
To achieve that balance, I start with authentic storytelling, grounding my work in real experiences, emotions, and characters that audiences can connect with. Rather than preaching or pushing an agenda, I pose questions, highlight contradictions, and illuminate truth, allowing the audience to think, feel, and respond in their own way.
