LYRIC FREE VERSE: HOW WILL I REACH HOME?" BY SULAIMON KHALID

As the road keeps changing
its name
and its face,
how will I reach the home
I have kept in my mind for long?

How many doubts, like fire,
will I walk through,
and barriers, like walls,
will I climb
before I get to that future;
that home
I have only seen with closed eyes?

How many versions of myself,
and how many years will it take
to grow
for my hand
to reach the door;
the only door between me
and my home?

How many times must I break
and rebuild
to become the shape,
to become the figure
my dream has always shown,
the one it sees as the future?

I don’t know how long.
I don’t know how.
But when my hand finally touches
that door between me and my home;
my dream;
I will not tremble.

And If that door asks; “Who are you?”
I will answer with scars,
with patience,
with pride.
This is me; your owner.
