PROFESSIONAL WAYS TO ANSWER JOB INTERVIEW QUESTIONS- BY DAVIES SEUN.E
Dear applicants,
You're welcome
You came just right in time.
I'm here to put you through the professional ways to answer job interview questions .
Have you ever wondered why your name was not part of those that were short-listed the last time you went for a job interview? even though you believed so much in yourself that you will be selected , maybe because you know you answered a lot of questions on that very day.
But this is the point, it is not about the numbers of questions you answered, but how you answered them.
How you answer these questions really matters because
It is properly accessed by the human resource manager (HR) of the company before short listing takes place.
Before I proceed, I would like you to know this:
It is important that you know that your punctuality, outfits, and comportment matter a lot.
These are firstly accessed prior to any other thing.
Let's take it a step after the other;
PUNCTUALITY: Your ability to show up early at the company you are called for an interview matters a lot.
If you come earlier than scheduled time, you will be considered a serious applicant, and that's a 5/10.
If it's otherwise, you are considered unserious, and they might terminate the interview.
This is the first assessment that is carried out by the HR and other top management of the company.
OUTFIT: Your outfit is the set of clothes that you wear together to a job interview.
You are not to put on what you feel like wearing.
Stop wearing casuals. Some of you are even fond of wearing Ankara because you feel like it ok or because you just sewn it , because it's your favourite, because it's glamorous . No! All of that needs to stop. I will tell you over and over again that the best outfit to consider for a job interview is a coperate wear. (Pant trouser, chiffon/camisole +a suit jacket /blazers to cover, and flat black shoes for women)
Ladies, you are expected to consider a light makeup, well neatly packed hair with simple earrings)
Guys, you are expected to consider low-cut or properly trimmed hair. Stop going for a job interview with dreads locked on your hair. curly or tinted/dyed hair, unkept beards) This makes you look irresponsible, and it makes them feel you are here for fashion.
The applicant's outfits are secondly accessed after punctuality.
COMPORTMENT: It is very crucial to know that the way you comport yourself, before, during, and even after the interview matters a lot.
The way you speak, how fluently you speak.
[ It's high time you stopped the habit of mumbling words like "erm , erm." When you are asked questions]
It makes the management feel you are incompetent and may not have good communication skills.
The confidence you build while speaking, your body gestures.
Sometimes, job interviews are not only carried out by HR alone , depending on the standard of that organisation. The board management ranges from the chairman, executives ,duty manager, and general manager. e.t.c
might also be involved and you're expected to put up good self conduct/behaviour which gives the impression of how you can execute your job if you were given the opportunity to, so it is best to properly conduct yourself before, during, and after the interview ( don't act be destabilised, I understand the crowd might be intimidating, it now looking like you're facing a panel of justice but you need to build great confidence and answer your questions brief and fluently)
After these three has been accessed by the HR and other top management involved in the job interview.
How you answered questions during the interview is also accessed.
I'm sure you don't want to be out of the list this time around, hence;
Below are professional ways to answer a job interview:
First of all, on entering the office or hall (space where the interview will be conducted)
▪︎ GREET! (With an audible voice and not with chewing gum laying in between your teeth, chewing of gum during a job interview can be considered as a misconduct and sign of disrespect)
▪︎Secondly, observe the environment, pull up a chair and sit, and ensure your phone is slienced so it doesn't cause any form of disturbance/distraction )
▪︎ Wear a smiling face. This is important as it is part of the interview.
No organisation wants to employ a staff member who can not at least put a smile on his or her face.
A smile is simply a charm to attract customers to the organisation .
▪︎ When you're settled and you are asked to introduce yourself. Pls for crying out loud, stop mentioning your family background or your favourite this and that.
You hear responses like "I am ......by name, I come from the family of 4, I'm actually the first born.
My favourites include writing, singing, I love to read during my free time
That's not what they want to hear.
Those are unnecessary information that piss them off . And this gives them the impression that you don't know what you are doing or why you are here in the first place.
PROFESSIONAL WAYS TO ANSWER JOB INTERVIEW QUESTIONS INCLUDES;
Here are more reasonable responses to questions below:
1."Can you introduce yourself?" Or tell me about yourself.
Answer: I am (full name) a graduate of (institution), with a degree in (course of study).
I am hardworking and committed to the job I find myself doing, I am a fast learner, I'm free spirited, and honesty is my watch word.
I recently worked at (previous place of work)
(Briefly mention your duties at the previous place of work)
I believe I will also contribute my quota to the growth and development of this company/ organisation as well.
(Talk with confidence and with a smile on your face, maintain eye contact while talking, don't look down)
2. Why did you leave your previous place of work? Or what made you leave your previous leave of work ?
Answer:a) I left my previous place of work because we relocated....
b)... or you can say you believe in growth, and you need to secure a better job with better pay so you can handle expenses as it comes.
c)Or you need to step up for a higher position, which is currently not available at your previous place of work.
Do not act naive. When you are asked this question, they want to know if your reason for leaving your previous workplace is the same. You will practice at their own company as well.
Mind you, if you were fired at your former place of work or you left willing because of poor welfare of staff or low salary or delay .
No matter what reason it is, don't mention these during a job interview.
You will be surprised to hear comments like
"we will get back to you . Thank you for coming!", and they won't get back.
3. Okay, Mr or Miss/Mrs, how do you intend to contribute to the growth of this company if you were given the opportunity to work as .............(position you applied for)
Answer: I will glady take up this position, as a supervisor in this reputable company, I will ensure to over see the staff activities on a daily basis, i will ensure corrections are made when necessary e.t.c i work with other staff as a team, communicate effectively, and efficiently carry out my job. Although I am still open to training, and like I said earlier, im a fast learner. I will give it my best, sir/ma.
4. Okay, so how long do you intend to work with us.
Answer: I intend to work as long as you, as the company, want to keep me.
(Don't go about specifying the duration, i.e., 3 months, 8 months, a year & more. Don't do that!)
5. What's your salary like at your previous workplace/ how much were you receiving monthly at your previous place of work?
Answer: ( Ensure to give a reasonable amount, i.e. not too low and not too high) because they will judge based on that.
6. Okay! so what's your salary expectation?
Answer: How much do you intend to pay for the role or position I applied for, sir/ma?
[N:b if you need to specify amount, ensure to consider the standard of the organization first before specification and then negotiate)
(After the agreement is made on the amount the company is willing to pay, both employers and applicants are good)
7. If you are asked to resume? When would you like to start?
Answer: note! If the interview was conducted on a friday, you can tell them you would like to resume on monday so that you will use the weekend to get yourself fully prepared for work.
But if it's during the week, you can say, you don't mind resuming the next day!
(Either of the responses above shows your willingness to work)
8. Alright! we will give you a feed back after a proper assessment . Thank you for coming.
(Employer says to end interview)
Answer: (with a smile on your face) Thank you so much for the privilege given to attend this interview, I will be expecting your feedback. Thank you, sir/ ma.
(Majestically carry your belongings and step out)
All job interview answers should be concise/short & simple & meaningful as well.
Trust me. Once you put this to practice, you will be part of the candidates short-listed next time.
