SIGNS OF SPIRITUAL IMMATURITY- BY GREG ELKAN

_“By now you should have been teachers...”_ – Heb 5:12 (CEV).

The church is only as strong as its members. For the longest time, we have placed much attention on numerical increase but have not given as much to qualitative increase. Perhaps it is because quantitative increase is easier to measure and observe.

Spiritual maturity is not measured by the number of years a person has been in a church or in the faith. It is not measured by how many hours a person prays each day or the number of scriptures they can quote. From the Bible’s perspective, spiritual maturity is gauged by how much more like Christ we are becoming each day, by the increase in our knowledge of Christ, by the increase in our understanding of biblical righteousness, and by the increase in our love walk with other believers (Philippians 1:9-11; 3:10; Hebrews 5:12-14; 1 Corinthians 13:1-8; 2 Peter 3:18).

We can, however, look at the secular psychological definition of immaturity to break these church-related terminologies and concepts down to a level we can relate to. Some signs of immaturity include impulsivity, avoidance of responsibility, inability to handle criticism, dependency on others for validation, lack of empathy, black-and-white thinking, limited problem-solving skills, difficulty with long-term planning, rigid thinking, poor communication skills, inability to learn from experience, and overly simplistic views.

If, while going through this list, you find yourself thinking of a particular member in your church, then you probably need this more than you may think. 😊
