CHRISTMAS: YOUR MINISTRY AFFECTS THE MINISTRY BY PASTOR GREG ELKAN.
As we’ve established throughout this week, Joseph and Mary were ministers of the Gospel who faithfully executed the role assigned to them by God. Like the patriarchs and prophets before them, and the apostles and disciples afterwards; they were part of an unbroken chain of faithful servants whom God used to bring about His plan for humanity.
Joseph was long gone at the church’s inauguration in Acts 1, and Mary was merely given an honourable mention then (Acts 1:14). She apparently was too old at that time to be running around Jerusalem, Judea, or Samaria. And definitely too old to take the Gospel _“to the uttermost part of the earth,” (Act 1:8). The spotlight at that time was on the Apostles.
But what’s interesting is that, if she hadn’t fulfilled her ministry effectively, they would have had nothing to fulfil. Because Christ couldn’t have left the tomb if He never left the womb decades earlier; and there’s be nothing to believe on if Mary herself hadn’t believed years before many of them were even born.
The Christmas story reminds us that there’s actually only one work of the kingdom, and all of us ministers are merely playing our own part in this large work. You may not be able to see how what you’re doing is affecting – or will affect – the overall work, but know for certain that that it does have an impact.
The ministry of the apostles were dependent on the successful ministry of Joseph and Mary; and their own ministry was hinged on the success of the ministry of the prophets. If Isaiah had not prophesied of “Immanuel” (Is 7:14) there’d be no “Emmanuel” for the angel to tell to Joseph (Mt 1:23); if David hadn’t _“served his own generation by the will of God”_ (Act 13:36) there would be no _“throne of His father David”_ for Jesus to ascend unto (Lk 1:32).
We ourselves can do ministry today, because the disciples that took over from Joseph and Mary did their ministry own well. And so did Ambrose, and Jerome, and Augustine, and Gregory, and Polycarp, and Martyr, and Tertullian, and the many, many line of persons in church history whose work directly and indirectly played a role in bringing the gospel to us today.
So Beloved, as we prepare to commemorate the highpoint of Joseph and Mary’s ministry tomorrow (the birth of Christ), take a moment to reflect on yours today. Because, whether you realise it or not, how you do the work is having an impact – positively or negatively – on the greater Ministry of God’s agenda on Earth.
AMEN
